Question 95a - Do you think Garden City principles should be applied in the Black Country? Yes/No; If yes, how should they be applied?
Representation ID: 535

Respondent: The Woodland Trust
we would like to see trees and woods included as part of a garden city concept. There are good examples of this in other parts of the country, for example expansion of Peterborough in the 1970s along garden city lines, where urban wooods and shelterbelts were used to screen housing from major arterial roads.

We strongly support the proposal to include ancient woodland in the list of nationally designated sites, as this will strengthen protection of this irreplaceable habitat in line with Government policy and in particular Section 118 of the NPPF.
Ideally we would like to see your strategy state that ancient woodland should only be subject to loss or damage in the most wholly exceptional circumstances. We would like to see similar protection applied to ancient and veteran trees.

We would like you to consider the Woodland Trust's Access to Woodland Standard for inclusion as an indicator in the Black Country Core Strategy. The standard recognises that woodland has the capacity to provide a wide range of social, economic and environmental benefits to local people.
The standard aspires that everyone should have small wood of at least two hectares within 500m of their home and a larger wood of at least 20ha within 4km of their home. Further information can be found in our Space for People Report, which is available on Woodland Trust website

We would like to see this policy amended to include the role of trees planted in the right location in absorbing air pollution and hence improving air quality. Trees have been shown to be effective in absorbing a number pollutants produced by traffic, including particulates. It is important to choose the right species of tree and to plan planting locations carefully.

We would support the suggestion that natural environment SUDS should be prioritised. These are often quite a cost effective way of helping to alleviate flooding.
We would like to see trees and woods used as part of natural environment SUDS wherever this is feasible. In urban areas in particular, trees can be very effective in alleviating surface water flooding by slowing down the rate at which water reaches the ground and enters the drainage system.
